Our Frequently Asked Questions
Here you’ll find answers to some of the questions we are asked most often about our treatments and services.
If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to get in touch — our friendly team will be happy to help with any questions you may have.
How Often Will I Need Treatment?
The frequency of your appointments will depend on your individual needs and the condition being treated. For routine foot care, we typically recommend appointments every 6–8 weeks to help keep your feet healthy, comfortable and free from common problems.
What Can I Expect at My First Appointment?
Your first appointment is designed to help us understand your foot health and provide the most appropriate treatment for your needs.
We'll begin by discussing your medical history, current medications and any symptoms or concerns you may have. A thorough foot assessment will then be carried out, including circulation and sensation checks where appropriate, to build a complete picture of your foot health.
Once we've identified the cause of your problem, we'll explain your treatment options, answer any questions you may have, and carry out the recommended treatment during your appointment whenever possible.
To finish your visit, you're welcome to enjoy a relaxing foot massage with a luxurious moisturising cream, leaving your feet feeling refreshed and revitalised
How Long Will My Appointments Last?
Your initial appointment typically lasts around 45-30 minutes, although we recommend allowing up to 60 minutes to ensure there is plenty of time for your assessment, discussion and treatment.
Follow-up appointments usually take around 30 minutes, although the duration may vary depending on the type of treatment and your individual needs.
Will You Cut My Fingernails?
Yes. We offer fingernail cutting and filing for a small additional charge. Our podiatrists are also qualified and insured to assess and treat a range of conditions affecting the hands and fingernails.
What conditions do you treat?
At Total Care Chiropody and Podiatry Clinic, we diagnose and treat a wide range of common foot and lower limb conditions to help keep you comfortable, active and pain-free.
Our treatments include:
• Corns and calluses
• Dry, cracked heels
• Verrucas
• Athlete's foot
• Fungal nail infections
• Ingrowing toenails
• Heel pain
• Painful feet
• Biomechanical and musculoskeletal conditions
• Diabetic foot care
• Routine foot care
• Fingernail care
• Skin conditions
And much more
Our experienced podiatrists are also trained to recognise the early signs of vascular, neurological and dermatological conditions. If we identify any concerns that may require further investigation, such as circulatory problems or suspicious skin lesions, we can advise you and refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional when needed.
How Do You Ensure Instrument Hygiene?
Yes. Patient safety and hygiene are our top priorities. All instruments are thoroughly cleaned and sterilised using a medical-grade autoclave before being sealed in sterile pouches.
A fresh, sterile set of instruments is used for every patient and opened in front of you during your appointment, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness, safety and professional care.
We kindly require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or changes. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be subject to the full appointment charge.

If you're unable to pay by card, we also accept BACS transfers, cash, and cheques.
What Qualifications and Experience Do We Have?
Our podiatrist, Shaiba Afzal, holds a BSc (Hons) Degree in Podiatry from the University of Huddersfield, completed in 2018.
Shaiba is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is a proud member of the Royal College of Podiatry. She also holds a medical emergency procedures certificate, an enhanced DBS certificate, and comprehensive professional insurance.
With ongoing commitment to professional standards and patient care, you can feel confident that you are receiving expert podiatry treatment from a fully qualified practitioner.
What Is Your Cancellation Policy?
If you are unable to attend your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer the time slot to another patient.
We kindly require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or changes. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be subject to the full appointment charge.
Why Do We Ask About Your Medical History?
Understanding your medical history helps us provide safe and effective treatment tailored to your individual needs.
Certain health conditions and medications can affect your foot health, circulation, healing process and the treatment options available to you. By having a complete understanding of your health, we can ensure you receive the most appropriate care.
We kindly require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or changes. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be subject to the full appointment charge.
What Is the Difference Between a Podiatrist, Chiropodist and Foot Health Practitioner?
Many people are unsure about the difference between these terms, as they are often used interchangeably. However, there are some important differences in training, qualifications and the services provided.
Podiatrists & Chiropodists
Podiatrists and chiropodists are the same profession, with podiatrist being the modern term now used throughout the UK and internationally. The name changed to avoid confusion with chiropractors and to reflect the wider scope of modern foot care.
Podiatrists are highly trained healthcare professionals who specialise in diagnosing, treating and preventing conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs. They typically complete a BSc (Hons) Degree in Podiatry and must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
They can treat a wide range of conditions, including corns, calluses, verrucas, ingrown toenails, heel pain, biomechanical problems and diabetic foot complications. Podiatrists may also provide advanced treatments such as minor nail surgery, prescribe certain medications and supply custom orthotics where required.
Foot Health Practitioners
Foot Health Practitioners (FHPs) provide basic foot care services and can help with common concerns such as nail cutting, hard skin and general foot maintenance.
Unlike podiatrists, FHPs are not regulated by the HCPC and do not complete the same level of clinical training or hold a recognised healthcare degree. Their scope of practice is more limited, and they may refer patients to a podiatrist if a more complex condition is identified.
Which Professional Should I See?
For routine foot care and minor concerns, a Foot Health Practitioner may be suitable. However, if you have a painful foot condition, ongoing symptoms, diabetes, circulation concerns or require specialist treatment, a qualified HCPC-registered podiatrist is the appropriate choice.
At Total Care Chiropody & Podiatry Clinic, our qualified podiatrists provide expert assessment, treatment and advice to help maintain healthy, comfortable feet.
